Sugar Cookies

Having baked many cookies since childhood, this is the a favorite recipe among sugar cookies.

  • ¾ c butter, room temperature
  • ¾ c sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 T milk
  • 1 t vanilla extract
  • 2 ¼ c flour
  • 1 ½ t baking powder
  • ¼ t salt
  • demerara sugar for sprinkling

In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar together.  Add egg, milk and vanilla and mix in.

In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt.  Add to creamed mixture and mix until completely incorporated.

Form into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for a couple of hours.

Line cookie sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll half of it out on a lightly floured board.  Cut with cookie cutters, place on baking sheets, sprinkle with demerara sugar and bake for ten minutes.  Cool on wire racks and enjoy.  (I usually double the recipe).

The dough can be colored with food coloring.  These cookies are also good not sprinkled with additional sugar and coated with colored royal icing.
