Struffoli - Honey Balls

Our grandmother used to make these honey balls for years.  We traditionally make them for Christmas.

  • 2 c flour 
  • 4 t baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 ½ c sugar
  • 2 T shortening 
  • 6 eggs
  • 4 ozs. honey 2 T vegetable oil

Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt.  Mix with sugar and shortening.   Add eggs, one at a time until well incorporated.  Roll into finger size ropes and cut into ¼ inch pieces.   Fry until light brown and cool in a colander .  Cook honey in 2 T vegetable until it comes to a boil, remove from heat and drizzle over balls in colander.  Mix and add seasonal colored balls.  Enjoy!
