Cinnamon Doughnuts

I am fortunate to have my grandmother's doughnut cutters.  This one's for you Gram!   Gather the family, make some coffee and enjoy these treasures!

  • 3 T shortening
  • 1 c sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 ½ c flour
  • ¾  t nutmeg
  • ¼ t cinnamon
  • 4 t baking powder
  • 1 t salt
  • 1 c milk
  • canola oil, for deep-frying
Line a couple baking sheets with paper towels and set aside

Place the shortening with and the sugar in a large bowl and beat until incorporated.  Beat in the eggs, one at a time and set aside.   In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt.   Starting with the flour mixture, alternately add with the milk, stirring into a soft dough.

On a floured board, roll the dough to a half inch thickness. Cut with doughnut cutter.

Place the canola oil in a deep pan to a three inch depth, heating to 375 degrees.   Fry for about three minutes on each side, turning only once.   Remove the doughnuts to the prepared baking sheets to drain.

3/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

Place the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in a small, shallow bowl.  Whisk them together and place the warm doughnuts in the bowl to coat with the sugar and spice mixture.

Enjoy with a glass of ice cold milk.   Delicious!
