Homemade Caramels

Caramels make a nice gift with seasonal cookies.   These are super easy!

  • 1 c butter
  • 14 ozs sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 c corn syrup
  • 2 c brown sugar
  • 2 t vanilla
  • 1/4 t salt

Butter a 9" x 13" baking dish and set aside.

Place the butter in a large saucepan and melt over medium heat.  Add  the condensed milk, corn syrup, and brown sugar, stirring constantly.  Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly until caramel reaches 245 degrees.    Immediately remove from heat and stir in vanilla and salt and spread the caramel into the prepared pan.

Let cool completely, cut into squares and wrap in pieces of wax paper.
