Oven Baked Onion Rings

Even though these are baked versus fried, these onion rings come out crispy.  Further, they are healthier for you versus fried.

  • cooking spray
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • ½ c milk
  • 5 large egg whites
  • 2 c ornflake crumbs
  • ½ c flour
  • ½ c cornmeal
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ t garlic powder
Separate onion slices into rings; set aside.

Place milk, and egg whites in a large bowl and whisk together.  Place the crumbs, flour, cornmeal, salt, and pepper and garlic powder.

Dip the onion rings into the milk mixture and then in the flour mixture, coating well.   Dip back into the milk mixture again, and lastly back into the flour mixture, shaking off excess.

Place on a baking sheet in a single layer.  Repeat the process with remainder of onion rings and place them in the refrigerator.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

When temperature is reached, remove the onion rings from the refrigerator and spray with cooking spray.  Flip the rings and spray the other side.   Bake for fifteen minutes or until golden brown.
